A renowned aviation company was on the lookout for clamping equipment to enable milling of large, pre-rolled, cylindrical-shaped Airbus skins. Conventional chemical milling was no longer an option because it is very time consuming and unfriendly to the environment.
Their special requirement consisted of designing and mounting the equipment on to the machine already in place and integrating control procedures into the milling machine.
In order to mill contours and pockets into the cylindrically formed aluminium workpieces more than 3000mm long, they have to be pressed into a flat position. Witte developed a clamping solution, comprising of several sections, custom built to fit around the existing machine. Confined space conditions presented a special challenge.
